The magnitude of the changes impacting our identities and roles in the practice of school psychology, and the demands being placed on us, are profound.  COVID-19 is forcing us to dramatically accelerate our reconceptualization of how we practice.  Your MASP Board is working to develop guidance that will help us to have a unified School Psych approach to responding to the demands for our services and pivoting how to function going forward.

The Board represents all of you statewide, and we need your input!  What ethical and practice challenges are you being faced with?  What guidance will help you to feel equipped for the pressures and challenges that will undoubtedly come your way in just a month from now and throughout the next school year?

On the following two dates, we have arranged for Town Hall-style meetings to gather your thoughts and questions.  From there, we will work swiftly to prepare information from key sources to help with our transition into this school year.  We also anticipate the guidance evolving over the year.  Topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Evaluation
  • Assessment
  • Behavioral observations and rapport with children
  • Instruction and intervention
  • Safety, trauma-response, and overall mental health
  • Social justice and racial considerations
  • School personnel self-care
  • School Psychology overall role and function

In order to help us prepare, you can submit questions and concerns prior to the Zoom meeting by completing this brief survey.

We hope that you can make at least one of the meetings.  If not, please also consider writing any examples of pressures and challenges that you are facing, or any other thoughts, requests, or ideas, to the Professional Standards subcommittee chair, Cheryl Somers, at cheryl.somers2010@gmail.com or (313) 516-5600, which she will share with the full committee.

Sincerely,

Your MASP Board, Professional Standards subcommittee
